I cannot add much more to the other glowing reviews . . . this book is a rare gem! I read straight through from page one to the very end in one long session, putting my life on hold, to be with Mickey, the man in this story - in his life, his relationships, his understanding of his time and place.I have rarely felt so completely present in another time than our own as I was in reading this book. The 1930's, in the south, for just an average man and the people in his life, captured me from the first pages and never let go. The pitch-perfect language, the facts, details, the sense of this period in America was redolent with the atmosphere of this particular time and place, almost from the beginning. The author's portrayal of this man was astounding. I was there with him every step of the way and the more I learned about him, the more I was drawn to and admired this character, doing the best he could in his time, his life.
There's no flash here, though there is some quiet excitement, love and loss, frustration, sorrow, some deep saddness, regret, yearning. Mickey is the everyman of this time, in his period. I felt fully present in every twist and turn in Mickey's life. I knew him better and better with each turn of the page. I rooted for him, saw life through his eyes, grieved with and for him, "kvelled" for him. I was connected to this character, this time and place, in a way that is NOT usual. I was as drawn into his world, his life, in a way that I was while reading "The Grapes of Wrath" and other of John Steinbeck's writing, or Hemingway's, or perhaps since reading "Gone with the Wind" as a teenager. And the more I watched him steadily make the most of his circumstances, bring us into his work, his home, his relationships, the more I admired him and felt that I KNEW HIM. I cared for him, I cared about him. I think he'll stay with me for quite a while.

Thank you to Ms Wells for her skilful depiction of not only a long-lasting human and family drama but also its time and setting, both of which she brings to the fore very vividly.
Her very evident love and knowledge of the region, its industry and its people are ever at the forefront - the book is a pleasure to read, both because of its story line and for what knowledge the reader can absorb at the same time.
The book's characters are well defined and very imaginable, as are their emotions - you can feel and see everything, not only through Mick MacDonald's eyes but also through those of all the other characters.
The situation of the railroad industry is extremely well brought out, and it is easy for the reader to assimilate both, the industry and the characters' individual sagas. The ranges of emotion are vividly described for everyone.
Thank you, Ms Wells, for a very excellent and, above all, enjoyable read.
The main character of RAILROAD MAN, Mick MacDonald, draws you into this story with his colorful first person account of his love for his railroad career and for his cousin, Marianne. Mick's relationship with Marianne is clearly drawn and you can feel Mick's heartache at his uncle's refusing to allow him to marry Marianne due to their close kinship. Mick ends up in a loveless marriage with Flo, who reminds me very much of Flo of the TV series, ALICE.
Mick never gives up his love for Marianne and he eventually begins to pursue her again after a number of years and he ends up in a long relationship with her. Strong characterization is one great feature of this novel, especially of Mick, Marianne and Flo. The dialogue is well done and there is much attention to detail, which make for a very engaging read.
This is a well-written literary romance, with lots of heartache, and a great and unexpected ending. I loved this story, and I highly recommend it. I am looking forward to reading Alle Wells' other books, all of which are on my for PC!
It's 1933 and Mickey MacDonald is one of the lucky ones, having secured a job with the railroad when so many people are out of work. Mickey is riding high; he's young and has his whole life ahead of him. But when he's told he can't marry the girl he's loved since childhood, he begins heading down the wrong road which leads him to unhappiness. But that is not the end - there is much more!
Railroad Man tells a realistic story of railroad man Mickey MacDonald and spans a period of over 50 years of his life. This is not a fairytale romance with a happily-ever-after ending, but it is not a sad story either. Most of us have had love, success, heartache, failure and loss, and so has Mickey. In Railroad Man, author Alle Wells immerses us in a time in history when life was hard and people had to be tough to survive. She succeeds in portraying this time period with perfection and gives the reader a feel for what the early to mid-1900s were like. This novel is truly a unique story and is perfect for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
I finished Railroad Man a couple of days ago and was so moved I've been thinking about it ever since. Mickey grows up in the deep South of the 1930's, a region just as hard hit by the Depression as any other part of the country. His Daddy is dead, and he grows up in the family homestead on 500 acres with his mother and two older sisters. Lewis and Aunt Sarah are the African Americans who help around the house, and Marianne is Mickey's true love.
Everything goes sour for Mickey when his Uncle Johnny Mack won't even consider letting the two get married. Mickey leaves town and joins the railroad, starting on a long and successful career. I was mesmerized by the way women played such a significant role in Mickey's life, from his wife Flo to his cousin Marianne, his mother, and his sisters.
The events in Railroad Man are not uniformly happy, just as life itself is no walk in the park. The author gets it just right in this saga of the old South, as there is not a drop of sentimentality to be found anywhere here. This book is a spectacular achievement in the southern storytelling vein of Flannery O'Connor.
