Those with a stronger philosophical background than I will enjoy it, it is a bit of work to get through if you approach the topic of shamanism from the new-age, neo-pagan perspective. There's a great deal of information distilled into these 9 pages comparing three schools of thought. I had do a bit of research into Shamanism in opposition to biological drives so that I could follow the analysis - that's the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. It is a well-thought out monograph discussing different philosophic approaches to shamanism occurring as the result of a suppression of normal biological urges or trauma: shocks to the system (my interpretation of the material). I need to read it again, however, what she has to say is worth spending the time to understand it. I believe Ms. Armstrong is speaking from here own experience on the pathway to Shamansim, as well as assessing the differences in Nietzsche's and Bataille's approach. A must-read for any student of shamansim, or of world philosophy.
